Personal Journey: Reflection of a Web Design & Development

Before Web Development

At the beginning of my junior year, I wasn’t even in web development and design, but rather electronics engineering technology. The teacher I had for two years in electronics left, so this year we got stuck with a brand-new teacher. The shop’s name and curriculum also got changed a bit, with it going from electronics to electro-mechanical.

Most of the time, we just worked on personal projects, and only learned some new material. After the first semester, the new teacher decided to leave and the whole entire shop shut down, forcing all of us to pick other shops. I was very disappointed about the whole situation because I enjoyed being in electronics and hanging out with all my friends, but I now had to pick a completely different shop.

Finding a New Shop

The programs I was considering were computer networking, drafting, and web development. First, I shadowed drafting where I learned about and did a bit of 3D modeling, but I found it kind of boring and it was not really for me. Next, I shadowed web development where I got to play around in WordPress and learned more about what I would be doing if I chose that shop. Lastly, I shadowed computer networking, but I knew if I picked this shop that I would have to make up a lot of work. After a week, I decided to pick web development because I had fun when I was shadowing, I enjoy coding, and I wanted to learn more about design.

My Experience in Web Development

Over the course of the second semester, web development has grown on me more and more. At first, I wasn’t sure if I was going to like web development as much as I thought I was, but I enjoyed the second half of this year. I learned a lot about designing websites, coding, cybersecurity, social media campaigns, IoT devices, and using Adobe products.

My favorite projects in web development this year were designing my resume, the IoT device project, and the web final project. I liked designing both my resume and cover letter because I think that the orange and blue color scheme with the bars turned out very nice. I enjoyed the IoT device project because I liked working with my group and researching different smart devices. Lastly, I liked the web final project because we got to make a full website which combined most of the things I learned this year.

Overall, I have enjoyed being in web development the second part of this year. I liked most of the projects that we did, and I liked learning about designing and making websites. Even though I like web development and I’m excited for next year, I still enjoy electronics more and will probably focus on that after graduation.
